Mari Tamaki is already in her second year of high school when she realizes that all her intentions for her high-school years have remained unfulfilled. No spontaneous trips, no ditched classes, nothing! Again and again she shirks away at the last moment when she’s about to do something spontaneous and thus she always remains on familiar paths. However, one day, purely by chance, she meets Shirase Kobuchizawa, who has decided to travel to Antarctica for a very personal reason. Despite all the mockery and demotivating comments of her peers, she is determined to pursue her dream. Mari, impressed by Shirase’s strength of will, sees her opportunity to finally overcome her own tendency for hesitance and set out on the great journey she has so longed for.

Mari Tamaki ist schon im zweiten Jahr der Oberschule angelangt, als sie mit Schrecken feststellt, dass alle Vorsätze für ihre Oberschulzeit bisher unerfüllt geblieben sind. Keine spontanen Reisen, kein Schuleschwänzen, rein gar nichts! Immer wieder schreckt sie im letzten Moment davor zurück, etwas Neues, Spontanes, Unbekanntes zu tun und verbleibt so stets in gewohnten Bahnen. Der Zufall führt sie eines Tages jedoch mit Shirase Kobuchizawa zusammen, einem Mädchen, das sich aus sehr persönlichen Gründen fest vorgenommen hat, in die Antarktis zu reisen. An diesem Vorhaben arbeitet sie unablässig und ungeachtet des Spotts und aller demotivierenden Kommentare ihres Umfelds. Mari ist beeindruckt von Shirases Willensstärke und sieht nun ihre Chance, ihre eigene Zögerlichkeit endlich zu überwinden und die große Reise zu machen, die sie sich so lange vorgenommen hat.

Take a minute to ask yourself this question... If I were to provide a complete translation of "Souya Monogatari" (a forgotten polar expedition anime), would you watch and possibly rate it as highly as Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, even though it has no moeblobs cutely crying beads of tears? If the answer is no, congratulations, you proved my point about how exploitative and incredibly overrated this title is. The single star is for the educative dimension this anime has. That's it. Waifuist fanboys may disagree with me as much as they want, but we know emotionally manipulative operatics work wonders on them.
